Treatments of the Gemstone

The gemstone in the shop always looks beautiful and attractive. However, many people do not know the reason why the gemstone is so beautiful and attractive. Though the gemstone is just only a natural stone, after many process steps, the beauty of the gemstone appears before our eyes.

There are different treatments to process gemstones to enhance the color or clarity. But depending on the kind and extension of treatment, the value of the gemstone are different. Some treatments are used mainly due to the treated gemstone is stable and unchangeable. They are heat, radiation, waxing and filling.

Heat can improve the color or clarity of the gemstone. For example, most citrine is made by heating amethyst, while partial heating with a strong gradient can make a stone partly amethyst and partly citrine. The aquamarine should be heat treated to dispose of the yellow colors or make the existing blue color purer or change the green color into the attractive blue. A considerable portion of all sapphire and ruby is treated with a variety of heat treatments to improve both color and clarity. Most gemstone should be heated at low temperatures to remove brown color of it and add an attractive blue or purple color.

Radiation is also an important step for those gemstone. Most greened quartz is also irradiated to achieve the yellow-green color. Most blue topaz, both the lighter and the darker blue, has been irradiated to change the color from white to blue. Some gemstones are made not perfect enough, which may have a little residual radiation, but strong requirements on exported stones are ensured public safety.

Waxing, also called oiling process, is a remedial way for the natural rough gemstone and makes the gemstone smooth and lighten. Turquoise containing natural fissures should be filled with wax or oil to disguise them. This wax or oil is also colored to make the turquoise appear of better color and clarity. Some emeralds is also mainly treated in a similar way.

When the gemstone has natural fissure, it needs to be filled for a better look. Or else the gemstone is not valuable as an artwork. The filled matter is usually the glass, which is nice and easy to be used. But some manufacturer use the lead glass to fill, which is quite easy to be detected.

From above process treatments, it is shown that the heat is very important for modern gemstone jewelry. Other treatments are used according to the natural condition of the gemstones.
